Hell
Is Hell Fire Burning Now?

Where is Hell? What is Hell? Why is Hell? When is Hell?

And do people really roast in a fire throughout the ceaseless ages of eternity? Is Satan in charge of such a place? Will people writhe in eternal torment without hope of the suffering to ever end? Many churches preach such a doctrine but what does the Bible have to say on this very important subject? The very reputation of God is involved in the answers, and His Word has a lot to say on the subject.
God's word is final!
"All the lessons learned which God has caused to be placed on record in His word are for our warning and instruction. They are given to save us from deception. Their neglect will result in ruin to ourselves. What ever contradicts God's word we may be sure proceeds from Satan."
Patriarchs and Prophets - Page 55

From the beginning, it has been the work of the Devil to misrepresent the character of God. In heaven he caused one-third of all the angels to doubt God and join him in his rebellion. Since his expulsion from heaven, it has been his studied purpose to wreak havoc on earth. He seeks to alienate the affections of God's children through deceptions that challenge the mercy and love of God. Pagan beliefs and teachings have taken the place of Bible truth. By a misuse of texts, manmade theories appear to be supported by the Bible. Many a would be believer has forever turned away from God, just because of a mis-understanding of this important subject. Let us discover what the Bible really teaches concerning Hell.
1. How many lost souls are being punished in Hell today? 2 Peter 2:9 KJV "The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgement to be punished:"

_______________________________________________

Note-God reserves or holds back the wicked until the day of judgement to be punished. So no one is in Hell today.

2. When will sinners be cast into hell-fire? Matthew 13:40-42 "40 Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age. 41 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth."; John 5:28,29 "28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation."

_______________________________________________

Note- The lost do not go to hell at death. The Bible talks about two resurrections in which those who are in their graves will awake from their death sleep. The lost come up in the second resurrection. Hell is future.
3. Where are sinners (who have died) now? John 5:28,29 "28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation."; Job 21:30,32 "30 For the wicked are reserved for the day of doom; They shall be brought out on the day of wrath. 31 Who condemns his way to his face? And who repays him for what he has done? 32 Yet he shall be brought to the grave, And a vigil kept over the tomb."

_______________________________________________

Note- All sinners who are lost are in their graves. See the special study on "The State of the Dead"

4. What is the reward or punishment for sin? Romans 6:23 "23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."; John 3:16 "16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."

_______________________________________________

Note- Eternal life is only for the saved. The wage or payment for sin is death. The wicked "perish" or die the second death. John 3:16 is one of the most quoted and least understood passages of the Bible. The true believer will receive everlasting life, but the rest perish in the furtue hell fire. They will be no more. Immortality will be for the redeemed only and that they must put on at the second coming. See the special study on "The Secret Rapture".
The Second Death
5. What do the wicked (unsaved) receive in hell-fire? Revelation 21:8 "8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."

_______________________________________________

Note- The Bible says that God alone has immortality 1 Timothy 6:16 "the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen."
When Adam and Eve were driven from the garden, (Genesis 3:2), an angel was posted to guard the tree of life so that sinners would not take of the tree and live forever. The wicked will die the second death. The Bible is clear about their FINALITY. It says the wicked suffer "death" or "die." Romans 6:23 "23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."; Romans 8:13 "13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.; Ezekiel 18:4,26 "4 “Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall die.";
John 8:21 "21 Then Jesus said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come.”"; Romans 8:13 "13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live."; James 1:15 "15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death."; Revelation 21:8 "8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." Death is the absence of life! Die means one ceases to live. No one ever needs to believe that the lost will burn forever in pain and torment. That is the gospel of Satan and is contrary to the loving character of God. The lost will be punished for their unforgiven sins and their reward is to die the second death. That is the everlasting punishment. Death and eternal separation from God. God could have done no more to save them. More proof texts to follow on the finality of the second death.

6. When and how will the hell-fire be kindled? Matthew 13:40-42 "40 Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age. 41 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.; Revelation 20:9 "9 They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them."

_______________________________________________

Note- The New Jersualem City of God comes down from heaven Revelation 21:2 "2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.", then the wicked attempt to capture it, then God rains down fire from heaven upon the earth. This fire is the real Bible hell-fire.

7. How big and hot will hell-fire be? 2 Peter 3:10 "10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up."

_______________________________________________

Note- Water will burn as if it were fuel, mountains and rocks will melt as a fire of indescribable magnitude consumes every trace of sin from this planet.
How long will the unsaved suffer in the fire?
8. How long will the wicked suffer in the fire? Revelation 22:12 "12 “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work."; Matthew 16:27 "27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works."; Luke 12:47,48 "47 And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48 But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more."

_______________________________________________

Note- The Bible gives no timetable, just that some will be punished longer than others. The Hell fire was originally planned to destroy Satan and his angels, but the unsaved will join him. No doubt he will burn the longest, but he too will die and be no more. Some people who were basically good people will probably suffer the least. But every scriptural reference under question #5 shows that that suffering will end when the unrighteous die the second death.
Will The Fire Go Out?
9. Will the fire eventually go out? Isaiah 47:14 "14 Behold, they shall be as stubble, The fire shall burn them; They shall not deliver themselves From the power of the flame; It shall not be a coal to be warmed by, Nor a fire to sit before!"; Revelation 21:1,4 "1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."

_______________________________________________

Note- The Bible makes it clear that there won't be a coal or fire left, and that there will be no more death, sorrow, crying or pain when the wicked have been destroyed and this earth is recreated. ALL the former things are passed away, and that includes Satan, the wicked and hell-fire. If God were to allow sinners to spend eternity in a fiery horror chamber, He would be more viscious and heartless than men have ever been in the worst of war atrocities. An eternal hell of torment would be hell for God, who loves even the sinner.
In what form will the unsaved be when hell fire begins?
10. Will the wicked be in bodily form when hell-fire begins?
Matthew 5:30 "30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell."; Matthew 10:28 "28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell."; Ezekiel 18:20 "20 The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

_______________________________________________

Note- Jesus made it clear that the unsaved will be in bodily form when hell fire begins.
Will the devil be in charge of hell?
11. Will the devil be in charge of Hell-fire? Revelation 20:10 "10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever."(See thought question #6 on page 3 regarding "forever");
Ezekiel 28:18,19 "18 “You defiled your sanctuaries By the multitude of your iniquities, By the iniquity of your trading; Therefore I brought fire from your midst; It devoured you, And I turned you to ashes upon the earth In the sight of all who saw you. 19 All who knew you among the peoples are astonished at you; You have become a horror, And shall be no more forever.”"

_______________________________________________

Note- Satan will be thrown in to hell fire. He will burn and pay for all of the forgiven sins of the saved that Jesus' blood covered. He will after a time become ashes and be no more forever. That's God's promise from His word. What a merciful God. Satan as Lucifer in heaven was once the holder of the highest position of all the created angels. God has no pleasure in the death of the wicked and he will grieve for Lucifer and what he could have been had he been able to check his spirit of rebellion in time.
Does the word hell always mean a place of burning?
12. Does the word "hell" as used in the Bible, always refer to a place of burning or punishment?
Answer- NO! The word hell is used 55 times in the Bible. It has been translated from several different words with various meanings:
Old Testament-
"Unseen state" or "grave" - 31 times.
New Testament-
"The nether world" or "grave" - 11 times.
"A place of burning" - 12 times
So, as a reference to a place of burning, there are only 12 cases.
God's real purpose for hell fire
13. What is God's real purpose in hell-fire? Matthew 25:41 "41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:"; Revelation 20:15 "15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire."; Psalm 37:10,20 "10 For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; Indeed, you will look carefully for his place, But it shall be no more. 20 But the wicked shall perish; And the enemies of the LORD, Like the splendor of the meadows, shall vanish. Into smoke they shall vanish away."

_______________________________________________

_______________________________________________

Note- God's purpose in hell-fire, is to destroy the Devil, his angels, sinners and all traces of sin, so as to make the righteous safe for eternity. There shall be no deadly virus of sin to contaminate the universe ever again. An eternal hell of torment would perpetuate sin and make it's eradication impossible. An eternal hell of torment was never God's plan. That doctrine was never in the Bible and was invented by men led of the devil. Satan enjoys seeing God viewed as a tyrant. No one will ever be in heaven because they feared hell. People are saved because they love and obey Christ.
Destroying sinners is foreign to God's nature
14. Isn't the work of destoying sinners foreign to God's nature?
Ezekiel 33:11 "11 Say to them: ‘As I live,’ says the Lord GOD, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live.; Luke 9:56 "56 For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village."; Isaiah 28:21 "21 For the LORD will rise up as at Mount Perazim, He will be angry as in the Valley of Gibeon— That He may do His work, His awesome work, And bring to pass His act, His unusual act." The KJV says "His strange act."

_______________________________________________

Note- The work of God has always been to save man, not destroy him, that's why the final destruction of the wicked is called His "strange act."
God's Post Hell Plans
15. What are God's post-hell plans? Nahum 1:9 "9 What do you conspire against the LORD? He will make an utter end of it.
Affliction will not rise up a second time."; Isaiah 65:17 "17 “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind."; Revelation 21:3,4
"3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”"

Note-God will create a new earth and restore it to the Edenic paradise it once was.
Your Thought Questions Answered
Eternal Torment
1. Doesn't the Bible speak of eternal torment?

Answer- No, that is a man made doctrine.
Unquenchable Fire
2. The Bible says that the wicked will be destroyed with unquenchable fire. Explain.

Answer- Unquenchable fire means it cannot be put out. But when everything has been reduced to ashes, it goes out. Jeremiah 17:27 says Jerusalem was destroyed with unquenchable fire. In 2 Chronicles 36:19-21 it says this fire turned the city into ashes. Jerusalem is not burning today.
Everlasting Punishment
3. The Bible says the wicked will receive everlasting punishment. Explain this!

Answer- Notice the word is punishment, not punishing. The punishment is the second death and it is the death that is everlasting.
Everlasting Fire
4. Matthew 25:41 speaks of everlasting fire for the wicked. Does it go out?

Answer- Yes. See Jude 1:7. Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed with everlasting or eternal fire. That fire turned them into ashes as a warning to those after that should live ungodly. 2 Peter 2:6.
The Rich Man and Lazarus
5. Doesn't the story of the rich man and Lazarus teach an eternal hell of torment? Luke 16:19-31 "19 “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. 20 But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, 21 desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. 26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’
27 “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ 29 Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’"
Answer. No indeed! It is simply a parable used to emphasize a point. The point is verse 31. Many facts make it clear that this is a parable:
First, Abraham's bosom is not heaven. Hebrews 11:10,16.
Second, people in hell can't talk to those in heaven because all the dead are in their graves awaiting the resurrections. John 5:28,29. And they have no conscious state Ecclesiates 9:5,6.
Third, people are rewarded at the second coming of Christ, not at death. Rev 22:11-12
Fourth, The lost are placed in hell at the end of the world, not when they die. Matthew 13:40-42.
Wicked Tormented Forever?
6. Doesn't the Bible speak of the wicked being tormented forever?

Answer- The word forever as used in the Bible means simply a period of time, limited or unlimited. It is used 56 times in the Bible for things that have already ended. It is like the word tall. Tall means something different when describing men, trees, mountains.
In Jonah 2:6 "forever" means three days and three nights.
In Deuteronomy 23:3 it means ten generations.
In the case of man, forever means as long as he lives, or until death. See I Samuel 1:22,28 "22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will take him, that he may appear before the LORD and remain there forever.”"; Exodus 21:6 "6 then his master shall bring him to the judges. He shall also bring him to the door, or to the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall serve him forever."; Psalm 48:14 "14 For this is God, Our God forever and ever; He will be our guide Even to death."

So the wicked will burn in the fire as long as they live, or until death.

Note-The teaching of eternal torment has done more to drive people to Atheism or insanity then any other invention of the devil. It is slander upon the loving character of a tender, gracious, heavenly Father. Based on the word of God and the real truth about hell, you can reject any other teaching as a doctrine from the devil himself.
